The Star shines at VIVID 2015

The VIVID Festival of light and ideas is now a major date on the Sydney event calendar and this year was no exception with the festival expanding beyond the borders of the Rocks and CBD, branching out with installations in Pyrmont, Broadway and even Chatswood.  Being a major landmark in the area, The Star entertainment precinct got in on the action with their own VIVID showcases.

The Star’s operational team at Echo Entertainment engaged the services of the creative collective Fourth Wall to come up with visions and concepts for Pyrmont Park, the local streets and even the façade and building itself.  The VIVID Game Zone was the result, and allowed the public hands on control and interaction of lighting effects across the precinct.

The famous signage feature, “THE STAR” letters (often the background for a selfie) were to get their own makeover, with Fourth Wall developing a paparazzi themed concept in the form of a backdrop of giant flash bulbs, complete with animated colour changing sequences to a soundtrack.

Digilin Australia were engaged to bring the concept from the computer screen to real life, producing custom LED fittings that included RGB LEDs, as well as a high-bright white LED source to produce the “Pap Flash”.  The custom flash bulbs were driven via Digilin LDMX-PWM-15 LED drivers, with commands from a Coolux Pandora’s Box system to allow pixel mapping control and syncing to the audio track.

Jeremy Garling of Fourth Wall commented “Working with our creative team, Digilin turned our concepts into reality with clever solutions that used the latest in LED technology. We were concerned that brightness would be lacking, it was quickly evident that this wouldn’t be a problem when we tested a prototype on site… Wow!  They produced some serious output from what seemed to be such a small LED source”.

“From concept, product design and into the build, Digilin delivered on time and on budget and all hurdles that arose, as they often do in these projects, were quickly overcome.  I’m looking forward to working with the Digilin team again soon”.

Digilin sincerely appreciate the opportunity to be part of this world class event. While this application took us out of our comfort zone, we embrace the challenge to innovate and develop products to meet the needs of our clients.
