Her Majesty’s Theatre, or simply “The Maj”, was constructed in 1913 and is Adelaide’s oldest continuing performance theatre. Following the theatre’s $66m redevelopment undertaken by COX Architecture, The Maj now has a capacity of 1467 seats spread over 3 levels connected by two sweeping feature staircases. Its beautifully lavish backstage areas have increased in size and the venue now houses a rehearsal area that is as large as the stage itself.
Digilin is extremely proud to see its lighting and control products installed in many areas of the historic building, including the feature staircases, dressing rooms and bathrooms, backstage and in the venue’s many bars and connected elevators. HaloFlex is used extensively throughout the building, excellently complementing its flowing shapes and COX’s ‘Ribbon’ concept, which informed its interior design response. This is particularly apparent in the feature stairs and surrounding areas, where HaloFlex is used to contour the underside of the staircases and the ceiling edges. Warm colour temperatures are used throughout the venue, working beautifully with its interior materials to create an intimate, enchanting atmosphere.
Digilin’s specialist engineering capabilities were also relied upon to develop a unique linear lighting system for The Maj’s backstage. Our engineering team custom developed a linear strip fitted with both blue and white LEDs for installation into our Surface 75 profile, which was then connected to our two channel DALI driver. The result is a system that can be switched between high output 3000K white light for general illumination and deep blue low-level light for when performances are underway, which provides backstage operators with enough light to move around without interfering with shows.
