Designed in 1960 by Sir Roy Grounds, a leading architect of Australia’s modernist movement, the Melbourne Arts Centre is a cultural icon and regularly hosts some of the most important performance companies from Australia and around the world.
Several years after its completion in 1982, deterioration was noticed in the spire and the decision was made to replace it. Recognised as experts in fibre optic lighting and control systems, Digilin was chosen to provide the lighting for the new 166m spire.
The project was without a doubt, one of the most challenging projects that we have ever been involved in. It had some extremely demanding aspects and the client relied upon our significant engineering capabilities to create a solution.
In the end, over 6000 metres of Digilin fibre optic cables were installed to illuminate the spire. Digilin also custom designed the fibre optic lightsources, so that the very particular needs of this project could be accommodated. The result was uniform and consistent linear lighting via side-lit fibre optic cables. The colour and sequencing were achieved with DMX controlled dichroic glass colour wheels.
